Locating Anime Collectibles

Many people worldwide enjoy the hobby of anime collecting. As the name suggests, this hobby boils down to collecting any kind of merchandise that has an anime theme. There are many kinds of anime-related items available for purchase, and any anime item can be collected if it interests you.

You start an anime collection simply by buying items deemed collectible. As you research what to purchase, you will probably be surprised by how many items have an anime theme: figurines, DVDs, puzzles, books or plush dolls, for example. But whether you are purchasing for your own enjoyment or with the goal of making money on your collection, you should become acquainted with your many options for where to buy collectibles.

A main option is hobby shops. If you live near a mid-sized city you should not have to travel far to locate a shop where you can examine and purchase merchandise. Another advantage here is the personal touch. Many shop owners, often collectors themselves, will go the extra mile to keep a customer happy. If the shop nearest you does not carry collectibles you want, ask the owner about alternative pieces or other options.

The professional anime dealer is a great resource for collectors. A dealer who focuses on anime will have a great deal of knowledge in the anime genre and the field of collectibles in general. It is typical for professional anime dealers to work online, so if you do not have contact information, just run a standard Internet search. If you need a dealer who focuses on a special area, include that information in your search terms.

There are other ways the Internet can assist anime collectors. You can look online for collectibles for sale, for example. People often like to test the waters on online auction websites. Auction sites are easy to use, and have a wide variety of products available for bid at an equally large variety of starting prices. However, despite their many advantages, online auction websites require caution. You may spend more than you need to, or you could even be “scammed” by a seller who misrepresents an item or overvalues it.

Another place to find anime collectibles is in ordinary retail stores, along the lines of toy stores and department stores. The selection will not be wide, but you will be able to find items like anime figurines, plush toys, books, DVDs, and other standard things. However, keep in mind that collectibles carried by this kind of store will have been mass produced, and are thus less likely to increase in value. This is not a problem if you are only collecting for fun, but if you hope eventually to resell your collection and make a profit, people experienced in the field will advise you to shop at hobby shops and through professional anime dealers.

There are other ways to locate anime collectibles, too. If you want more options, consider yard sales, secondhand stores, estate sales, and live auctions from other collectors. You will meet interesting people, discover new items, and have more fun than you dreamed possible as you pursue collecting -- and you just may make some money as well!
